Sacred Legacy – Deluxe Clamshell
and Limited Edition Palladium
Print of “Canyon de Chelly”
in Limited Edition of 150
Value: $1250

Sacred Legacy – Deluxe Clamshell Edition
The Deluxe Clamshell Edition is an exquisitely designed tribute to the genius of Edward S. Curtis. It is a groundbreaking new look at Curtis’ photography, drawn exclusively from the encyclopedic personal collection of Christopher Cardozo. Sacred Legacy contains many examples of Curtis’ rarest images. The illuminating text, including an elegant foreword by Pulitzer Prize winner N. Scott Momaday, is woven throughout the book. This finely crafted edition of Sacred Legacy is cloth-covered in fine imported linen and custom-bound with a specially embossed spine. Each book is numbered and signed by the author Christopher Cardozo.

The Deluxe Edition of Sacred Legacy also includes a limited edition palladium print of “Canyon de Chelly” produced from Edward Curtis' original glass plate negatives.
Palladium, like platinum, is a noble metal highly prized by photographers and photographic collectors around the world for its ability to create photographs of extraordinary beauty and permanence. Each 6.75"x8.5" hand-coated, warm toned “border” palladium print, a presentation that Curtis used in less than one in one thousand of his master exhibition prints, was created by master printers Daniel Beers and Peter Bernardy of Curtis Centennial Editions in St. Paul, Minnesota. The colophon is hand letter-press printed by Indulgence Press and Wilber Shilling. The prints and all materials in the print presentation folio are made with archival materials.

The Deluxe Clamshell of Sacred Legacy, with the “Canyon de Chelly” palladium print, is available in a limited edition of 150.

Three Chiefs (.c 1900)
Print Size:14x17
Medium: Limited Edition Goldtone

Value: $3,500 (framed)

“The Three Chiefs” is historically the single most important of Curtis’ 40-50,000 photographic images. The photograph was made in the summer of 1900 and is the most recognized image from that critical, watershed period. It was during this short field trip to Montana with noted ethnographer George Bird Grinnell that Curtis first encountered Native Americans whose culture was still largely intact and who were also willing to share their religion, mythology, and personal lives with him. This brief experience ignited Curtis’ passion to preserve a comprehensive record of Native American life. This two-week experience inalterably changed Curtis and his life, and neither was never the same again. Curtis spent three days looking for the perfect combination of riders, sky, and prairie before making this image of three tribal leaders in their traditional garb on a beautiful upland prairie.

This Goldtone™ was produced using Curtis' original glass plate negative and created in Curtis’ favorite and most compelling medium: Goldtones™ have a luminosity and three dimensionality that is unmatched by any other photographic medium.

This Limited Edition fine art photograph comes framed with a Certificate of Authenticity from Christopher
Cardozo Fine Art.

Canyon de Chelly (c.1904)
Print Size: 21x27
Medium: Limited Edition Lithograph
Value: $1,750 (framed)

Canyon de Chelly (pronounced “de chay”, after the Navaho “Ta Shay”) has been a sacred site for the Navaho for hundreds of years. It is located in the dramatic canyon lands of Northeastern Arizona, in the heart of Navaho country. It is also believed to be one of the longest continuously inhabited sites in North America, dating back approximately 3,000 years. Of Curtis’ 40,000-50,000 negatives this is widely considered to be one of his most important and powerful. The insignificance of man relative to nature is clearly illustrated through the sheer size of enduring cliff formations (over 1,000 feet high) that surround the riders.

This Limited Edition lithograph was created by Master Printer Steven Anderson using custom-ground pigments and custom made paper and a proprietary process of his invention. Anderson is a world-renowned printer and recipient of numerous awards and has had his prints exhibited in over 2,000 museum exhibitions over the past forty-five years, including The Whitney, The Met, The National Gallery and MOMA. Each oversized print on heavyweight acid-free paper, is done in a Limited Edition and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Christopher Cardozo Fine Art.

Bear's Belly (c.1909)
Print Size:30x40
Medium: Limited Edition Archival Pigment

Value: $1,500 (unframed)

Born in 1847 near the banks of the Missouri River in present day North Dakota, Bear's Belly was a highly respected and honored warrior and a member of the Bears in the Arikara Medicine Fraternity. He acquired this bearskin in a dramatic battle in which he single-handedly killed three bears, thus gaining his personal “medicine”.

This over-sized 30” x 40”, archived photograph was created using an ultra-high-resolution scan from an original 100 year old Curtis photograph. Before scanning, each vintage photograph is professionally conserved to restore the print to its original appearance and fidelity. Using pigment-based inks to ensure archival stability, the image is printed onto special mould-made, 100% cotton acid-free watercolor paper produced in Wells, England at St. Cuthbert’s Mill. This process ensures that each image is faithfully created to conform to Edward Curtis’ original ideals and aesthetic.

Kotsuis & Hohhug (c.1914)
Print Size: 60x40
Limited Edition Mammoth Photographic Print
Medium: Archival Pigment
Value: $2,500 (unframed)

This is one of Curtis’ most important and compelling images from the Pacific Northwest. The photograph shows two marvelous masked dancers in the winter dance ceremony, each representing a large, mythical bird. The huge moveable wooden beaks were controlled by cedar bark twine. The Native people of coastal British Columbia had a highly evolved and beautiful material culture and extremely complex ceremonies and rituals. Their masks and ceremonial garb are world renowned for their beauty and power.

Drawing from our archive of over three thousand original Curtis photographs we have selected only six of Curtis’ most iconic and sought after images to create in the oversized “Mammoth” format. Our “Mammoth” prints dramatically present these images in a manner previously unseen. Each print is created using an ultra-high-resolution scan from a vintage Edward S. Curtis photograph. Prior to scanning, each vintage photograph is professionally conserved to restore it to its original beauty and appearance. Utilizing professional digital technology, the image is then optimized for printing. Using pigment-based inks to ensure archival stability, the image is printed onto T.H. Saunders Waterford, a mould-made, 100% cotton watercolor paper, produced in Wells, England at St. Cuthbert’s Mill. This process ensures that each image is faithfully created to conform to Edward Curtis’ original ideals and aesthetic.
